This is an example of the sort of blatant lies one can expect from the religious right in the U.S.
The first amendment to the United States Constitution states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof . . .” therefore any attempt to declare America officially a christian nation would be an act of treason. There can be no misunderstanding here, It’s about as unambiguous as possible. If you are under the impression the forefathers of your nation wished it to be a christian country you have been misled, lied to by your preacher and/or parents and perhaps you should question their motives. What do they have to gain by lying to you?
This is what the forefathers of your nation thought of christianity:
- George Washington: “The Government of the United States is not in any sense founded upon the Christian Religion.”
- Thomas Jefferson: “Christianity is the most perverted system ever shone to man.“
- Benjamin Franklin: “In the affairs of the world, men are saved, not by faith, but by the lack of it.“
- Ulysses S. Grant: “Declare church and state forever separate and distinct; but each free within their proper spheres.”
The preachers of christian propaganda often quote surveys and polls stating America is X percent christian usually between 65% and 80% depending on the poll but these polls are notoriously wrong on this issue as most people are under the mistaken impression that you are born into a religion. Most people will tick whichever box equates to whatever religion their parents attempted to bring them up in, not whether they are practicing members of said religion. There is a huge difference.
I no longer have the supporting data but I once read a statistical analysis comparing the numbers of people claiming to be religious and those who attend church in the U.S. and the figures suggested that if every believer went to church two times a year there would need to be seven times as many churches. It would be fair to state that if you never go to church you aren’t religious enough to claim it on a poll. I would love to see the results of an honest poll, just as I’m certain those who claim America as christian would not.
So, in short, if you want America to officially be a christian nation you are a traitor.
Thoroughly enjoyable read. And true, as well!
